WCNC: Young NC students making gains on reading skills Some of North Carolina's youngest students are meeting benchmarks in reading, according to new data released Thursday by the state Department of Public Instruction. NEWS & OBSERVER: NC private school enrollment is soaring, and it could rise even more. Here’s why. New statewide figures released this week show that enrollment in private schools grew by 11,457 students during the 2022-23 school year. Private schools haven’t added this many students since the 1971-72 school year, when they gained 11,764 kids during the fight over public school integration.

Roy Cooper "extremely disappointed" North Carolina lost out on offshore wind At the end of July, the Federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced three final Wind Energy Areas in the Central Atlantic, none of which ended up in North Carolina. Governor Roy Cooper responded with a press release today calling the decision “extremely disappointing.”

FOX: Eastern NC hospital closes as locals flock elsewhere for health services A rural eastern North Carolina hospital has closed its doors, largely the result of what its operators described as a declining surrounding population that was going elsewhere for medical care. Martin General Hospital in Williamston suspended operations on Thursday and is filing for bankruptcy, according to a hospital news release.
